Local Know-How, Done Right
The Triangle's red clay subsoil is the single biggest reason grading goes wrong here. Clay drains slowly and stays saturated long after a rain, so a lot that was simply leveled flat will trap water against foundations and pond in the low spots — a problem that gets worse through our hot, humid summers and heavy summer thunderstorms. We grade specifically for that, building in positive slope and real drainage paths instead of just chasing a level surface. Grading & Excavation Questions
Why does my Triangle yard hold water even though it looks flat?
Almost always it's the red clay underneath. Clay soil drains very slowly, so water sits on or just below the surface instead of soaking away, especially in low spots. A 'flat' yard with no real slope has nowhere to send that water. The fix is regrading to create positive slope and a drainage path that actually carries water off the area.
What's the difference between rough grading and finish grading?
Rough grading establishes the overall shape, base elevations and major slopes of a site — the heavy dirt-moving stage. Finish grading is the final smoothing pass that creates an even, drainage-correct surface ready for sod, seed, concrete or pavers. Many projects need both, and we handle them as one continuous process.
Do I need a permit or erosion control for grading in Wake County?
It depends on how much soil is being disturbed and where your lot sits. North Carolina has erosion-control and stormwater rules, and some local jurisdictions require permits once you pass certain thresholds. During the free walk-through we'll flag whether your project likely triggers any of that so there are no surprises before we start.
Will fill dirt settle and cause problems later?
It will if it isn't placed and compacted correctly. We add fill in lifts and compact each layer rather than dumping it all at once, which is what keeps a building pad, driveway base or filled area stable instead of settling and cracking a season later. Proper compaction is the whole point.
Can you fix a slope that keeps eroding and washing out?
Yes. We reshape failing or too-steep slopes, rebuild washed-out areas, and regrade to slow and redirect runoff so the bank stops sliding. On clay slopes the key is managing the water moving across the surface, which we address as part of the grading plan rather than just rebuilding the same slope to fail again.
